What can be treated with Reiki?

Reiki has had a positive affect on all forms of illness and negative conditions. This includes minor things like head or stomach aches, bee stings, colds, flu, tension and anxiety as well as serious illness like heart disease, cancer, leukemia, etc. The side effects of regular medical treatments have also been reduced for many. This includes the negative effects of chemotherapy, post operative pain and depression as well as improving the healing rate and reducing the time needed to stay in the hospital. Reiki always helps and in some cases people have experienced great healings which have been confirmed by medical tests before and after the Reiki treatments. However, while some have experienced miracles, they cannot be guaranteed. Stress reduction with some improvement in ones physical and psychological condition are what most experience.

Reiki has no known contraindications related to health concerns.

Is massage safe to do during pregnancy or other medical ‘conditions’?

– Yes.  However, as with anything, make sure to consult your doctor if pregnant or nursing.
Normally a session will be done lying down on your belly or flat on your back, but if you are pregnant the practitioner may ask you to lay on your side for your comfort and the safety of your (soon to be) new child.

Should I do anything to prepare for my appointment at Luminary Wellness?

-There is not really anything you need to do in advance but some of these may help.

  • Eat and drink healthy the days before and after your session including avoiding caffeinated drinks the day of your appointment.
  • You may wish to wear comfortable clothing if you are choosing a clothed modality like Reiki or Cranial Sacral Therapy. You will be asked to remove shoes and jewelry before the session.
  • Arrive a few minutes early so it is easier for you to relax and enjoy the session and please arrive 10 minutes early if it is your first session so you may fill out a brief health questionnaire if this is your first visit.
  • Turn off your phone so you are not interrupted

Do I need to disrobe / get completely naked?

Short answer is: No, of course not. It’s your body and your choice.

One thing I heard on occasion before I went to Massage Therapy school was “Undress to your level of comfort.”  This is pretty vague.
It really depends on what you choose and what you want your therapist to work on effectively.
For a session that is only Reiki, or Cranial Sacral, or Reflexology you will only be asked to remove your shoes and maybe jewelry. (Shoes and socks removed for Reflexology)

For massage methods, anytime  you undress for a session we provide draping. I leave the room before you undress and wait for you to say that you are ready (on the table covered by the sheet) or I knock first to make sure you are ready. I use sheet draping and carefully move a part of the sheet to uncover the area I’m going to work on. If I’m working on the back I will fold the sheet down to your hips. If you’re wearing underwear I’ll gently tuck the sheet into the waistband, to protect your clothes from massage oil. If you keep your bra on, it’s tricky to work on the back but I’ll work around it.
In general I can effectively work through clothing however, there may be times that clothing can reduce the efficacy of certain massage methods. For example: If you want some serious work in the gluteals for low back/ upper leg/ hip pain it is easier  if I don’t have to work through the clothing especially with thicker clothing parts like waistbands and seams.  I’ve seen many different shapes and conditions of bodies. I’m not going to judge you. I’m thinking about where the muscles are and what health condition they are in.

The other scenario concerning clothing is with Manual Lymphatic Drainage. The majority of the Lymphatic system is very close to the surface and therefore requires a very light touch to work with. It is extremely difficult to effectively do genuine Manual Lymphatic Drainage over clothing and I will ask that you remove everything. Again, you will be draped and I only uncover the general area and side of body that is being worked on.

The genital area will always be covered with our draping methods.
One option for gluteal work is that “thong” style underwear makes it pretty easy to effectively access all the muscle groups while keeping your underwear on.

Small towels/cloths, and a blanket are available in addition to the opaque sheets covering you.

Please let us know if there is something more your therapist may do to help you feel comfortable during the session. The session is for you.

Do I have to use the draping?

If you prefer less conservative draping talk to your therapist about your preferences before the session starts. It will ultimately depend on what you and the therapist are both comfortable with.  If the therapist prefers you are draped please respect their decision.

Are there any side effects?

– As there are not any chemicals or drugs used in our methods, there are not any side effects like pharmacology products, however it is always recommended to check with your doctor first especially if you have an acute or serious condition.
You may experience a ‘detox’ as the therapy and essential oils help your body move out harmful toxins from your system.  The more healthy you eat and drink in the days before (and after) your session, the better you will feel.

Should I get a massage when I’m ill or sick?

If it is something that came on suddenly it is probably best to reschedule especially if you have a fever or are vomiting. However, a Reiki session can be done under just about any condition.

If you have a chronic disease, massage therapy or any of the other modalities we offer may be highly beneficial for improving quality of life, reducing pain/discomfort and improving a sense of wellbeing. Just ask your doctor if they are ok with you getting a massage and make sure your therapist is aware of your situation so they can design the treatment to fit your needs and comfort.

When should I come in for a Session?

Now.  🙂
Any time is a good time. You don’t need to wait until you’re highly stressed or injured. Too often people wait until they reach this state to get a session. Instead of waiting until you’ve injured yourself or when pain starts, regular sessions work wonders for preventative care. It is also a wonderful way to cope with stress, both physically and emotionally/mentally. Also, great for lowering pain levels and increasing energy.

How often should I come in for a session?

The answer will depend on the reasons for the session. If a client comes in for injury relief and/or to relieve chronic discomfort that is interfering with their daily lives, weekly sessions or every few days may be highly important for a short while to see the improvement in relief and healing that they desire. For those who come in for preventative care and relaxation, once or twice a month is generally enough. Some wish to come in quite often just because they enjoy the benefits they get and how it helps their daily life.

Do you do Deep Tissue Work?

The short answer is, no.
In general, my focus is on a balance between the physical and non physical body of my clients. Working with physical, emotional, and mental aspects. However, there may be times that I will work out a ‘knot’ or work with a trigger point.

Can you cure me?

While some may call us “healers”, the only one who can “cure” you is yourself or you combined with God (or however you choose to call the divine.)  Any true healer, doctor, practitioner, etc knows this and will not claim to cure you.
What we can do, is assist you in your healing process on physical, mental, and emotional levels.

What is Lymphatic Drainage?

Lymphatic drainage massage utilizes gentle, short and light repetitive strokes, which encourages the cleansing of toxins from the body through lymphatic flow.

The functions of lymph fluid are diverse and vital to the well-being of the body.  The fluid is a slightly yellow clear substance, which is filtered and cleansed by the lymph nodes, which are found surrounding body organs and tissues.  Additionally the fluid carries antibodies and white blood cells to these tissues and organs, allowing the body to fight infection thus aiding the immune system.

Our lymphatic system is increasingly having a harder job cleansing the body of the multitude of toxins that we present to the body everyday through our diet, the environment we live in, our lifestyle, alcohol and the amount of refined foods that are available to us.  Lymphatic drainage enhances the flow of lymph, with facial drainage increasing in popularity, due to its invigorating effects on the skin and its ability to ease swelling in the neck and face.

Lymphatic drainage acts as a great compliment to facial rejuvenation acupuncture, which further lessens the signs of aging and recovers skin tone.

Why Therapeutic Grade essential oils?

Not all oils are created the same. Many essential oils, no matter how pure they claim to be, have some type of synthetic and/or chemical ingredients in them. Many that claim to be pure are actually not 100 percent pure from the natural plants and the batches will many times be inconsistent.
