Spinal Touch Technique

Massage Therapy is a fantastic method of moving blood and lymph in the body while bringing relaxation and less stress.  A Spinal Touch Treatment ™ will do the same thing with correction of muscle and visceral conditions that is more than just a relaxation, but handles traumatic as well as physical conditions that could be major health problems. The Spinal Touch Technique is believed to be the only non-force technique existing today that can alleviate all stress and help with major health problems!

Spinal Touch is based on an understanding of the natural impact of the force of gravity on the body. Any stress whether it is physical, emotional, mental, or nutritional can create an imbalance at the center of gravity of the human body. Spinal Touch realigns this center of gravity by using leverage fulcrums and muscle relaxation. It re-balances both energy and posture. Gentle and highly effective.

It is also the ultimate holistic therapy for people who have a stressful lifestyle. A postural assessment at a plumb-line enables the practitioner to customize the treatment to the needs of the individual. Postural realignment corrects distortion and gently heals aches and pains often within minutes. From the client’s point of view this is an effective and relaxing treatment.

A Brief History

Spinal Touch (sometimes known as or closely related to Bio Mechanics) has its origins with two Chiropractors called John Hurley and Helen Sanders. Dr. Hurley was a structural engineer who had become fascinated with the idea of applying his knowledge of structural stresses to the human body. To further this aim he trained as a Chiropractor. He obtained his Chiropractic degree in 1915. While in Chiropractic college he met a fellow student, Helen Sanders, and they married.

Together, in the early 1920’s, they developed a technique for postural reintegration using engineering principles, laws of leverage, physiology and Chiropractic. They called it Aquarian Age Healing. Drs. Hurley and Sanders eventually divorced and Dr. Hurley moved to Colorado where he continued to teach the technique until his death in the late 1950’s.

One of the few instructors that John Hurley trained was a Chiropractor called Francis Goes. He worked in private practice and kept the technique pure. In 1962 he taught another Chiropractor named LaMar Rosquist, over a period of about fifteen months, who collated all the material and changed the name to Spinal Touch..

Dr. Goes encouraged Dr. Rosquist to improve and refine the technique, and in 1975, with assistance from Jim Foster, he published “The Encyclopaedia of the Spinal Touch Treatment” and began teaching it.
One of Dr. Rosquist’s authorised instructors is Duke Cassel, LMT in Salt Lake City, Utah. Shane Butler was trained and certified by Duke Cassel.

Whilst there are many practitioners spread throughout the USA and the UK, there are very few in New Zealand/ Australia. At this time it appears Shane is the only practitioner on the North Island of New Zealand.  If you are looking for a practitioner on the South Island please contact Christine Blandford in Christchurch who has several years experience.
